Day 34: Equanimity is not Apathy
Today we explore the concept of Equanimity and how it differs to Apathy. Some people fear that if they practice mindfulness that they will become apathetic and disinterested in life. There is a significant distinction between being non-attached to something and being detached or disinterested.
Today your practice is sitting meditation. Observe what attachments and aversions arise for you. This may be to the meditation, the physical sensations in the body or thoughts that emerge during your practice. See if you can cultivate your equanimity. As my teacher S.N Goenka shares 'Equanimity is purity'.
What causes you to lose the balance of your mind?
What are you attached to and afraid of losing?
What are you averse to and afraid will stay in your life?
What would it be like to be neither attached to nor averse to these things in your life?
